Johns Hopkins Medicine International (JHI), the international arm of Johns Hopkins Medicine, has appointed Ronald S. Lavater Chief Executive Officer of Al Corniche Hospital (Abu Dhabi, UAE), which handles more than 12,000 births and 216,000 outpatient visits a year.¬

Al Corniche Hospital is a Joint Commission International (JCI)-accredited health care facility owned by the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (Seha).

Mr. Lavater has more than 15 years of health care leadership experience, including serving as CEO of Palms West Hospital, a 175-bed acute-care facility in Florida, USA. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and is an advocate for the mentoring of health care leadership talent.

'Ronald Lavater and the new management team bring many years of international experience in health care management and clinical education,' says Harris Benny, CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine International.

'Having an integrated management team at Al Corniche Hospital ties the staff to both Johns Hopkins' extensive clinical, research and administrative expertise and to the Hopkins teams already in the emirate at Tawam and Al Rahba hospitals. This will foster the sharing of best practices and create a nexus of excellence that will help raise the standard of health care in the UAE and the surrounding region,' Benny added.

Under the management agreement, signed between Johns Hopkins Medicine and Seha last September, Johns Hopkins experts undertook day-to-day oversight of the 235-bed Al Corniche Hospital.

'I am proud to have this opportunity and glad that I joined a strong team of highly experienced staff and doctors,' Lavater says. 'Together we will ensure that the hospital continues to be managed according to modern, patient-centered approaches and international clinical best practices.'

'One of Seha's strategic objectives is to establish Seha and its hospitals as the Abu Dhabi market leaders providing integrated, high-quality health care services,' says Saif Bader Al Qubaisi, managing director for Seha. 'Our partnership with Johns Hopkins Medicine and their selection of an experienced leader like Mr. Lavater reinforces that commitment.'

Al Corniche is the third hospital in the emirate to sign a management agreement with Johns Hopkins Medicine, based in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Tawam Hospital, a 477-bed tertiary care facility in Al Ain, and Al Rahba Hospital, a 135-bed community facility just outside Abu Dhabi City, also are managed by Johns Hopkins, and both facilities are accredited by Joint Commission International.¬
