Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Medical Director, Occupational Health Service or his/her designee, the Occupational Health Nurse provides educational, preventive, clinical, occupational health evaluation and, on an as needed basis, first responder services that help to achieve the optimal physical and mental wellbeing of staff, faculty and students at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q). He/she plans, develops, implements, manages and evaluates occupational health services and health programs for students, faculty and staff, in accordance with US standards and Qatar requirements and serves as the custodian of confidential health information.

 

Position Activities: Plans and develops an effective occupational health service for WCMC-Q: identifies service requirements and resources; recommends and implements programs; develops policies and procedures. Ensures effective operation of WCMC-Q's OHS: administers all health service policies and procedures and updates as necessary; ensures adherence to student and employee health immunization requirements, as directed. Ensures efficient operation of WCMC-Q's OHS: maintains inventory of, and assists with, purchasing of all clinical supplies, vaccines and pharmaceuticals. Stocks and maintains examination area, including cleaning and disinfection of patient care surfaces. Performs employee and student health evaluation and management activities: pre-placement and annual occupational health assessments; attends to routine sick calls during work hours; and refers to appropriate physician, or sub-specialist. Performs clinical tasks including taking vital signs, venipuncture, point-of-care testing and reporting, administering injections; assists physician with collection of specimens; and prepares laboratory specimens for transport. Evaluates laboratory results and notifies physicians and students/employees; reviews significant health problems with the Medical Director. Triages clinical phone calls from students/employees and provides appropriate self-care instructions, or directs student/employee to come in for clinical evaluation. Maintains patient records. Processes all blood/body fluid exposure incidents at WCMC-Q; follows-up with students/employees who have reported such incidents occurring off-campus. Provides emergency care/triage for work-related injuries and illnesses, or when individuals are taken ill at the workplace. Counsels employees and students about work-related illness and injury, and emotional and/or family problems; refers to Employee Assistance Program (EAP) as appropriate. Collects and manages health information: processes new students annually; processes new employees as required; screens health and occupational exposure assessment forms, and reviews health records for completeness and notes any conditions or occupational exposures requiring special treatment/accommodation. May provide orientation to new students and employees. Performs clinical evaluation of continuing students and existing employees as directed by the Medical Director and in collaboration with Director, EHS; maintains confidentiality of all information. Identifies needs, and develops, implements, delivers and evaluates, occupational health and health education programs for students and employees, in accordance with appropriate US standards and Qatar requirements to include: animal use; blood-borne pathogens; immunization and vaccination; hazardous material exposures; health education and disease management. In collaboration with Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), assesses employees and students for occupational exposure; recommends appropriate interventions, where required; ensures appropriate training and/or education is provided. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements RN or BS in Nursing, current nursing license, and prior administrative experience required Certified Occupational Health Nurse, or equivalent qualification Two years experience in occupational health setting, preferably in a medical school or research institution Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills Must be mature, empathetic, and have a positive attitude, and have the desire to provide a safe haven for students and employees, while maintaining strict confidentiality Must be a self-starter Working knowledge of Excel and Word Only candidates meeting the minimum requirements will be considered for the position.

 

Highly Desirable Requirements Current membership of American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (or equivalent) Knowledge of medical school and/or biomedical research occupational exposures Experience of living/working in the Middle East

Working Conditions/Physical Demands Exposure to infectious diseases and bloodborne pathogens Some lifting of supply boxes is required Exposure to disinfectant solutions Work typically takes place in a normal clinic and/or office environment requiring: Standing Walking Sitting Bending Operating clinical care equipment Operating a desktop computer and other office equipment

Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar was established in 2001 as a partnership between Cornell University and Qatar Foundation. The first medical school in Qatar and a pioneer of coeducation at university level, WCMC-Q offers an integrated program of pre-medical and medical studies leading to the Cornell University M.D. degree. Teaching is by Cornell and Weill Cornell faculty, including physicians at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) who hold Weill Cornell appointments. Enrollment has grown rapidly from 25 first year pre-medical students in fall 2002 to over 200 students from more than 30 countries as we entered our sixth year of operation in September 2007.
